Grotte di Castellana
The Grotte di Castellana are considered to be the most interesting underground attraction in Italy, for the richness of their crystalline concretions and the size of these natural galleries. They are situated just 40 km from Bari and are the result of the erosive action of an ancient underground river which moulded the calcareous rock for ages.
Nearly 3 km of subterranean pathways were discovered in 1938 by the speleologists Franco Anelli and Vito Matarrese, who ventured to a depth of nearly 70 meters underground and disclosed to the world one of the most visited wonders of Apulia.
